The Lunar Maria

The rapid cooling of basaltic lava resulted in the twelve volcanic rock formations on the moon, collectively known as the Lunar Maria

The Lunar Maria or ‘Seas of the Moon’, were given their names by early astronomers who mistook their solid forms for liquid
